Catching up with some of the people who've worked on Ahrens & Flaherty shows

ERICK DEVINE

1. What A&F shows have you done?

Bedazzled (for the BMI Showcase back in the day); Reading of Antler; Lucky Stiff (at Playwrights' for a weekend when the character man took ill; a few hours rehearsal and I'm on!)... then Lucky Stiff at the York Mufti Series some years later; Ragtime ( JP Morgan) & Seussical.(General Schmitz)

2. My Favorite A&F show is____ because:Ragtime because it's freakin' brilliant. One of the top ten musicals of all time, for my money; finding all that drama in a very emotionally distant book. Once on this Island still makes me cry when I hear it. Amazing.

3 ) My Favorite A&F song is. just one? I guess "Rain" from Once on this Island because it is brilliantly constructed, telling the story it needs to tell, bringing in the entire world of the show, illuminating character, and all with a driving melodic song. Astounding piece of musical theatre.

4) My favorite A&F memory is :They were so sweet and supportive when I went into Lucky Stiff at Playwrights' on such short notice. I was honored they even asked. But hearing them read and sing through Seussical at the first day of the reading was pretty amazing.

Also, In Toronto for the workshop of Seussical, Andrea Martin was doing Cat in the Hat and I was reading in the secondary rehearsal room one day when Steve and Andrea came in. They started working on the intro to McElligot's Pool , and Andrea would riff on a reading she thought was funny, and Steve would arrange, rewrite, fix & tweak on the spot. He'd do something musically that inspired Andrea to do something interp-wise, and that would inspire him, etc. etc. It was amazing to be present while these two worked on just a small portion of the show, to see how every detail mattered to them.

5) What I've been up to lately:Working when anyone actually asks (LaMancha on Long Island right now; Enter Laughing at the York in the fall), studying "acting for camera", gardening, seeing shows, being lazy.
